Happy Mother's Day! My mother generally thinks flowers are a waste of money
since they die so soon. Totally an Asian thing isn't it? So my solution was to
3D print her a rose and vase that will last much much longer.
I recently bought some rainbow filament to try out, mainly because I wanted to print some vases and get a cool color gradient effect. And it totally works, as long as you're using over 10 meters of filament. My first print came out in one solid color as it only used almost 9 meters of filament. But the three print above all used somewhere between 12 & 15 meters of filament which provided some nice color changes.
I used Silk Multcolored PLA filament from Amazon and printed these at .20mm layer height at 215 C for the first layer, 210 C the rest, bed temp at 60 C on my Prusa I3 MK2.5. And if you're interested in these vases, you can check them out on Thingiverse:
Lithophanes basically look like topographical maps but when they are backlit, a picture appears. They have been around for hundreds of years, but I've only recently discovered them and that they can be 3D printed. So I took a couple of photos, one of the Ghostbusters, and one of myself with Michael J Fox and converted them to lithophanes.
I learned how to do these from YouTube channel RCLifeOn.
The basic process is picking a photo and going to http://3dp.rocks/lithophane/ to have a printable lithophane file created. Make sure your Model Settings Thinnest Layer is set to 0.4mm.
And make sure your Image Settings are set to Positive Image.
I then upload my picture, choose Outer Curve as my model, run the program and download my STL file which I then send to my Slicer program.
I printed these at 0.1mm layer height with no support, 100% rectilinear infill, 1 top, 1 bottom and 1 perimeter layer, and a 5mm brim to help it stay attached to the build plate. Obviously, you can play around with these settings, but that's a good place to start. These prints took about 4-5 hours at those settings.
Maker Faire is billed as the greatest show & tell on Earth and it certainly lives up to that billing! Here's a quick video recap of all the cool things I saw and a little write up of my experiences with all the amazing makers I met at World Maker Faire NY 2018!
My first stop at Maker Faire was the Prusa 3D Printer booth because I wanted to see the SLA printer they had just announced. I found out about that printer through Joel Telling, the 3D Printing Nerd, and of course I saw him at the 3D printing village! Joel is a big reason I have a 3D printer and if you're looking into investing in one, his YouTube channel is a great resource to learn all about it!
Bill Doran built an absolutely beautiful one in a video you can check out here, and then issued the challenge to the PropTarts to build their own. Here's what I did.
Due to work, a few conventions I was preparing new coplays for, and a vacation, I had to wait until Labor Day weekend to start work on this project. A very generous PropTart with Fusion 360 skills far beyond mine uploaded a model for the dagger onto Thingiverse. It's an excellent model and I tried slicing it but could not for the life of me get the blade to fit on my 3D printing bed. So seeing as how I probably wouldn't be able to complete a full size build anyway, I decided to make a 50% scale version because you know, it would be adorable. So I printed out the sliced parts on my Prusa I3 MK2S using MatterHackers Pro PLA filament in gold.
Here's an Ecto-1 license plate keychain I modeled in Fusion 360. I took a picture of the license plate, imported it into Fusion 360, and built the layers on top of it drawing out each individual letter.
Happy Deadpool Day! I didn't see this design on Thingiverse so I drew it up in Fusion 360 and printed it with different color layers using Prusa ColorPrint.
Basically all I did in Fusion 360 was build up layers, one for the base, then one for the eye thingees, then one for the pupils. And then I printed each layer with a different color.
And here's the emoji coin in my hand. It's about 2 inches in diameter but you could scale it up or down.

I made a thing! And it's functional 3D printing! Most of the filament clips on Thingiverse attach to the spool. I have a lot of different filaments with different spool sizes so I wanted a clip that was universal. I liked the design of one clip that came with some filament I ordered so I whipped it up in Fusion 360. I like this design because it will apply to ALL my filaments.

I bought myself a little knockoff GoPro camera to take time lapse video of my 3D prints, and this is the last one I was able to do before the camera died on me and I had to return it. Enjoy!
As I look back on 2017, I went to a bunch of conventions, met some wonderful people and made some really cool stuff. To showcase all of that, I started to teach myself video editing and began uploading videos to YouTube. Here's some of what I did in 2017.
It was my first time at Emerald City Comic Con and my first time putting a video like this together and I think it turned out pretty good!
