Toy Gun Repaint in 60 Seconds

I needed a gift for a White Elephant party so I got a cheap toy gun from Five Below and repainted it. Here's a 60 second recap on how I did it.

Stay Puft Marshmallow Cupcakes

A couple of years ago I made Ghostbusters cupcakes using this recipe from Rosanna Pansino of Nerdy Nummies. I wanted to make them again this year for a Friendsgiving gathering when I came across this video for Stay Puft cupcakes and decided to make those instead. I took some liberties and put my own spin on things. Here's how I did it.

Among the ingredients I used:
White Cake Mix
Vegetable Oil
Eggs
Large and Mini Marshmallows
Marshmallow Creme
Vanilla Frosting
Blue Fondant
Red, White, & Blue Cookie Icing
Black Food Coloring Marker
Toothpicks

3D Printed Justice League Batarang

I apparently really like batarangs. But who doesn't?!? I made one out of foam last year and I 3D printed one about a month ago. Now, after seeing Justice League, I felt the urge to print another one. This time, it's the latest Affleck version from Batman V Superman and Justice League. Here's the Flash asking if he can keep it.

New York Comic Con 2017

I have a love / hate relationship with New York Comic Con. I think the venue is inadequate for the tons of people that go, it's hard to get to, and there's nothing else really around there to do. But despite those things, I always come away from the convention having had a great time. And that is due mostly to the amazing people I get to meet. So here's some of the awesome cosplay that I saw at New York Comic Con this year!

3D Printed Batarang

A little over a year ago, I made a batarang out of foam. Looking to up my propmaking game, I just recently purchased a 3D printer and decided to 3D print one.

This particular model is from myminifactory.com and you can get the model here.

While 3D printing is great at making props like this and it looked fine right off the printer, I still wanted it to look better. A little sanding to get rid of the 3D print lines, some black spray paint, and some silver dry brushing and it's looking pretty good! Below you can see how it looked off the printer.

It prints in 4 pieces because the batarang is designed to open and close.

And here's a little video of it.

CONstruct 2017

Here's a recap of CONstruct, a convention I went to recently that took place at The Compleat Sculptor. It's a convention for makers and artists that has workshops and panels demonstrating different techniques and materials and it was super fun!

Sir Botsalot Model Kit Project

Recently Bill Doran from Punished Props designed a robot resin model dubbed "Sir Botsalot." He partnered with Level 52 Studios to help produce a limited run of these kits and I was lucky enough to snag one.

Go Prop Yourself - Lightsaber!!!

A few months ago, I built a lightsaber out of $20 worth of parts from the Dollar Store. This was the start of a series of monthly challenges by the PropTarts, a propmaking group I'm a part of on FaceBook. Here's the compilation video I made for that challenge.

Space Gun!

Space Gun!!! Repainting a toy gun was the latest challenge from the PropTarts, a propmaking group I'm a part of on FaceBook. I decided to use this "Space Laser Light-Up Blaster" I bought from Walmart as my base.

Chirrut Imwe Staff Build

Donnie Yen plays the badass, blind, warrior monk Chirrut Imwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and I cosplayed as him at Emerald City Comicon. I started this cosplay by making his staff so here's how I did it.

The actual length of his staff varies throughout the movie so I decided to use this image as my reference. The overall length would be from the ground to my armpit, and the midpoint would be around where my hand is.

Mini Halo Sniper Rifle Project

I really should have spent this weekend working on a cosplay for Emerald City Comic Con, but I ended up working on this little project. It's a mini Halo sniper rifle! I started by finding an image of it (and a rocket launcher for a future build) and printing it out on card stock.

The basic premise is cutting out the image, tracing the basic shape onto foam, then building it out in layers. I used 6mm foam as a base, 3mm foam for the accents, wooden dowels for the barrel, and a pen cap & tire valve cap for the sight.

Lightsaber Build

One of the prop making groups I belong to, The PropTarts of Punished Props, put forth a challenge. Build a lightsaber using only $20 worth of materials bought from one store and only using small hand tools to build it. Above is my finished lightsaber. Below is how I built it.

So I chose Dollar Tree to purchase my stuff. I actually made two trips. The first time I went, I picked out mostly cylindrical objects without having a clear plan of what I wanted. That served to bite me in the ass because when I got home and plotted out my lightsaber, it just looked kind of boring. So I went back to Dollar Tree and purchased more items, this time picking things with textures.

Eleven Films I'm Anticipating In 2017

Only a month into 2017 means a whole new crop of movies to get excited about! This year, I just couldn't narrow my list down to ten, so here are the eleven films I'm looking forward to seeing in 2017!

11. John Wick: Chapter 2

What's it about?: Legendary hitman John Wick is forced back out of retirement by a former associate plotting to seize control of a shadowy international assassins' guild. Bound by a blood oath to help him, John travels to Rome, where he squares off against some of the world's deadliest killers. From Wikipedia.

Why I'm excited: The first John Wick was surprisingly fun! With Keanu Reeves back in an ass kicking role minus the Matrix special effects, John Wick was a very entertaining revenge flick. Acting skills be damned! Reeves is perfect for a hitman whose actions speak louder than his words.

When it opens: February 10th
