2016 nerdy views in Review

2016 was no doubt a savage year, and here at nerdy views, which is now three years old (yay!) it was definitely a year of transition. I started this site to write about movies, television, & entertainment in general, and this year I continued to move further away from that to focus more on building creative projects. And judging by the response I've gotten, it sounds like I'm doing a decent job. Anyway, I just wanted to take a look back at some of the things that made my 2016 memorable.

Celebs

Ghostbusters, Star Wars, Doctor Who, & the Power Rangers really does kind of sum me up. And add a little Fresh Price of Bel Air in there to top it off!

I met Peter Mayhew at WinterCon and he signed my Chewbacca Funko while he enjoyed his orange mocha frappuccino.

Steve Cardenas was the second Red Ranger from the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. I remember scheduling my college classes around that show.

I met Steven Moffat, the current Doctor Who & Sherlock showrunner just randomly at a Star Wars booth at San Diego Comic Con and I totally fanboyed it.

I met Ernie Hudson from the Ghostbusters at Hudson Valley Comic Con, and he was super nice in allowing me to take this selfie with him after he signed my Winston Zeddemore figure.

And finally, I wondered what Karyn Parsons from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was doing at WinterCon, but it didn't matter why because she was super cool, and her show definitely helped shape my sense of humor when I was younger.

I can't imagine meeting any of these people under normal circumstances, but at conventions, there's always a chance!

Star Trek Beyond Trailer #2

Star Trek Beyond seems to be flying under the radar. I feel like I should be more excited for this film. Anyway, here's the second trailer for Star Trek Beyond!

The trailer came out Friday night and there are already more capable breakdowns of it on the Internet, so I'm just going to point out the things the look the most interesting to me.

James T. Kirk has daddy issues trying to live up to his dad, Chris Hemsworth. Trust me, any mortal would have problems living up to that guy.

Ten Films I'm Anticipating In 2016

We're already a month into 2016 and with a new year comes a new crop of movies to get excited about! So here are the ten movies I'm anticipating most in 2016.

10. Finding Dory

What's it about? The friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish reunites with her loved ones, and everyone learns a few things about the true meaning of family along the way. From IMDb

Why I'm excited: Finding Dory is the sequel to possibly my favorite Pixar film, Finding Nemo. Pixar has had a great track record, but I haven't considered its films the past few years to be anything special. Cars 2 was horrible, I didn't even bother seeing Brave, and Monsters University was simply average. But I have renewed faith in the animation studio because Inside Out was absolutely excellent! Plus the original writer & director, Andrew Stanton is returning so this film has win-win all over it.

When it opens: June 17th

I Have Been And Always Shall Be Your Friend

Thirty-plus years later, that quote from the end of Wrath of Khan always gets me. Leonard Nimoy passed away today at the age of 83 from complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It's impossible to sum up his 60+ year career since he'll forever be remembered as Spock from Star Trek, and I'm not even going to try. The only way I know how to honor a man who has influenced me so much growing up is to share some moments that I enjoyed the most.

The Big Bang Theory

Nimoy retired from acting in 2010, but that didn't preclude him from doing voice-over work. Nimoy is one of Sheldon's idols, and in the episode "The Transporter Malfunction, he dreams about his Spock action figure giving him advice on what to do with his newly acquired Star Trek transporter toy.

Game of Thrones: The Mountain and the Viper

I call upon one of the great quotes from one of the great "evil" characters in history to describe how I felt after watching The Mountain and the Viper...

But unlike how Spaceballs ended, this episode finished more like The Empire Strikes Back, with the good guys beaten down and the bad guys in Westeros continuing to have the upper hand.

Note: I haven't read the books so any commentary I make is completely based on the show.

Don't Be A Fool Today

You can be a fool any other day in your life, just don't be one today! Because so many of us are aware of April Fools' now and have no reason to believe anybody or anything on this day, companies have turned April Fools' Day into a marketing opportunity designed not to fool us, but to entertain us. Here are three of today's nerdiest "pranks."

You've hopefully already heard about Google's April Fool's joke this year, and it involves catching Pokemon! If you've got a lot of time to kill, just head to Google Maps on your iPhone or Android device, click search, hit start, and then you gotta catch em all! I've got about 50!

Have you ever wanted to learn another language? Is that language Klingon? Well you do know that Shakespeare can only be truly experienced in the original Klingon. Now you can as Rosetta Stone has finally released a language pack for when you want to propose in the most aggressive manner possible. The thing I learned most from the video? "Dad" in Klingon is "Dad."

And something you have to see to believe, it's Optimus Prime in Titanfall.
